Committees

The Council’s work is managed by ten committees. Each year, at the Annual Meeting of the Council, the Chairs of the committees are elected. At the same time membership of each committee is reviewed. Members volunteer to serve on the committees of their choice.

Committees enable a small group of Members, usually about six or seven, to research issues in depth. Once they have thoroughly explored a matter, they make a resolution which is then recommended to full Council for approval. For a calender of Committee Meetings please click here.

For example, the Finance Committee sees every single financial transaction undertaken by the Council’s staff, no matter how small. They scrutinise the ‘audit trail’. This means that every order for goods and services is logged, that order is then checked against a delivery note, the order and the delivery note together are checked against the invoice and finally the invoice is matched to the cheque which pays for the goods. When the Finance Committee has satisfied itself that everything is in order, it then recommends acceptance of the month’s accounts to the full Council.
