MAYOR’S WALK FOR LYMPHOMA ASSOCIATION A RESOUNDING SUCCESS

The sun shined on the walkers in Wendover Woods on Sunday, 23rd May as Graham Webster, newly robed Mayor of Aylesbury, participated in a successful walk raising money for cancer charity The Lymphoma Association, one of the Mayor’s chosen charities for 2010-11.

Over 85 walkers attended, including several staff from Aylesbury Town Council, who joined those in support of a loved one battling lymphoma, those who had lost friends or family to the disease, and those who merely wanted to support this excellent cause.

In the heat, several participants opted for the shorter of the two walk routes (2.5 miles) whereas many decided to make the most of the sunshine by taking the 5 mile route. All those taking part agreed that it had been a fantastic way to spend a spring Sunday and were happy to give up their time in support of the charity.

“I’m over the moon about the fantastic support we’ve had from town councillors, staff and friends in support of this charity walk for the Lymphoma Association,” said Graham Webster, Mayor of Aylesbury.

“We have collected a substantial amount which I will be delighted to present to the charity, and everyone I’ve spoken to has told me what a wonderful day they’ve had.”

Lymphoma is the most common cancer affecting the under 30s and is currently the 6th most common cancer diagnosed by clinicians in the UK. Graham has chosen the Lymphoma Association, which provides free information and support to anyone affected by lymphatic cancer, as one of two Mayor’s Charities for 2010-11.

“I’m delighted to be supporting the Lymphoma Association during my time as Mayor,” he continues. “I really wanted to choose charities that provide support for young people, having worked closely with The Scouts for a number of years.

“I’m planning to take part in many other fundraising events for both the Lymphoma Association and my other chosen charity, PACE, and hope to drum up plenty of well deserved support!”

Alice Strudwick, director of fundraising at the Lymphoma Association said: “We rely on voluntary donations to enable us to continue to provide free information and support to anyone affected by lymphoma so we are incredibly grateful to the Mayor and everyone that came and made the day a great success.”
