Mayors Charity

Each Mayor chooses a charity which they support during their year as Mayor. For 2011/12, Cllr Mrs Jenny Puddefoot has chosen the Aylesbury Youth Action and Aylesbury Youth Concern. You can find out more about them on their websites: Aylesbury Youth Action and Aylesbury Youth Concern.

Aylesbury Youth Action

Aylesbury Youth Action aim to improve life opportunities for young people, aged 14-25, through volunteering activities, enabling them to make a positive contribution to their community. This is done by encouraging them to take action and make a difference in the lives of others, thus challenging and changing society’s perception of young people.

Youth Volunteering is great value because it has a double benefit to the community. Firstly, volunteering helps young people to increase confidence, self esteem, employability and skills and encourages them to take responsibility for themselves and others. Secondly, the projects are all of great value to the wider community helping some of the most disadvantaged, vulnerable and isolated members of the community.

Aylesbury Youth Action (AYA) is a youth led organisation which places young people at the heart of all decision making and project development. They promote and encourage youth volunteering by developing and running a diverse range of projects, often in partnership with other community organisations.

Examples of these projects include intergenerational work, supporting some of the older and most isolated members of the community through a number of initiatives such as gardening, Christmas shopping, and the wii sports project, where young people take Nintendo wii’s into day centres, sheltered housing and residential homes. AYA volunteers also run clubs, trips and activities for disadvantaged children such as the child victims of domestic violence at the Aylesbury Women Aid refuge and children and teenagers with disabilities in respite care at The Grove and on Action for Children’s Bucks Activity Project. Some projects are regular weekly commitments and some are one-off events to suit the needs and availability of volunteers. Other project areas include arts, sports and media.

AYA is also planning a new initiative called RSVP, which stands for the Ravens Supported Volunteering Project. This project will encourage and support young people with disabilities to engage in wide range of volunteering opportunities supported by a dedicated member of staff and other young volunteers.
