Riverside Walk

On the northern side of Aylesbury there is a gentle stream which flows through tranquil countryside. This stream, which eventually swells into the mighty River Thames, meanders by wild-flower strewn banks, beneath shady trees and by natural habitats for a large variety of local flora and fauna. It is alive with numerous species of fish, frogs, newts and other wetland inhabitants. It provides a dwelling place for moles, voles, rabbits, foxes and nuncjack deer. Insect life abounds. Iridescent dragonflies flash brilliant blue as they skim the surface. Birds sing: to us, for the joy of being alive; but to them, the serious business of enticing a mate or defending territory. The air hums with the sound of bees, busy about their pollen gathering. In the undergrowth, small creatures go industriously about their business of breaking down old vegetation to make fertile soil for new life.

In the distance the sound of children at play can be heard. This is because the Riverside Walk serves the residents of many houses, some amongst the most deprived in the Country. The elderly walk their dogs here. Mothers bring their babies for picnics. Families ride their bicycles. Lads lark about in the river. It is a joy to both young and old.

At each end of the Walk there is a formal recreation area, with amenities for youngsters from toddlers to adults. The idea is that those who feel boisterous can work off their energy on the sports fields and equipment provided, leaving people in search of peace to relax in the quiet meadows beyond. In this way, this unique recreational facility serves every sections of the population, to the enrichment and enjoyment of all.
