SCHOOLS AWARDED FOR THEIR BLOOMING SUCCESS

Children of all ages, parents and teachers were in attendance for the presentation of awards for the Aylesbury in Bloom Schools Competition last Wednesday at World’s End Garden Centre. Cubs from the 1st Aylesbury Scout Group were also in attendance to collect a prize from the residents’ section of the competition.

Upwards of 70 people were in attendance, including children of all ages from 12 different schools in Aylesbury, out of 14 entrants. The activity on offer, vegetable-people making, proved incredibly popular and some really creative ways to use vegetables were shown by many children.

The prizes were presented by The Mayor of Aylesbury, Cllr Graham Webster, and Dale Lewis, Regional Manager of the Garden Centre Group. The very generous prizes included hampers with watering cans, seeds and tools put together by Worlds End Garden Centre, a mushroom growing kit and a patio planter, also from World’s End Garden Centre. The winners were also presented with a trophy and certificate by the Mayor, and every school taking part received a certificate.

Seven year old Evan Fearn was also rewarded for his efforts in his vegetable garden at home, when he was awarded with the trophy for Best Vegetable Garden in the resident’s section of the competition. Evan, a pupil at Ashmead School, spends all his time in the vegetable patch and even asked for a greenhouse for his birthday. The 1st Aylesbury Scout Group, who were also entered in the residents section, were presented with an award for Best Neighbourhood Improvement, due to their efforts in clearing and re-planting the exterior of the Scout Centre.

“We were so pleased with the standard of entries this year,” said Cllr Mark Willis, Chair of the Environment Committee and also one of the Judges of the Competition. “All the childrens’ enthusiasm is so inspiring and I’m sure their gardening experiences this year will well equip them for the future.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to the schools who took part and put so much effort into the competition, the organisers, Aylesbury Town Council, and also World’s End Garden Centre who have been so generous with their hospitality and gifts for winners.”
