TOPIARY FOOTBALLER STOLEN – AYLESBURY TOWN COUNCIL APPEAL FOR INFORMATION
A topiary footballer erected by Aylesbury Town Council in an effort to improve the aesthetics of the town was stolen from Exchange Street Roundabout on Tuesday night.
At approximately 11:15pm on Tuesday, 8th June, two males were caught on CCTV carrying the topiary footballer through the HBOS car park and on through the station car park. However here the trail ended, and Aylesbury Town Council are now appealing for anyone with further information to get in touch with the Police.
The topiary statue of the footballer has been growing for approximately six months, and was erected just a few hours before it was stolen from the Exchange Street roundabout last night. The statue was placed in a flowerbed designed to represent the England Flag to signify Aylesbury’s support for England in the World Cup football, which is due to start in a few days. Another topiary statue of a cyclist, erected to represent Cycle Aylesbury on the same roundabout, was not tampered with.
“It’s disheartening to know that people are capable of such a pointless act of vandalism,” Said Mayor Graham Webster after hearing of the theft.
“When the Town Council has put so much effort into topiary and planting to improve the look of the town, it beggars belief that people want to damage it. “Aylesbury Town Council’s hard working team are trying to make the town a nicer place to live and visit, and this kind of act is not helpful in achieving this.”
The two topiary statues and the planting on the roundabout were organised and paid for by Aylesbury Town Council. Anyone who has any further information about the theft should contact Thames Valley Police on 0845 8 505 505.
