This Fractured Land: Stories from the past and future @ Discover Bucks Museum

Inspired by its history and imaginative power, the artists, Lian Chan, Ellie Laycock, Jane Peacock, Ellie Reid and Caroline Thomson, look at the land from a geological, historical, social and mythological point of view. With access to the Museum’s collections, the work that they have created specifically for this exhibition encompasses themes of storytelling, the ancient past, social conflict over land, the uncertain future of climate change and the emotional power of the land itself.

On display alongside their work which includes paintings, prints, photography, sculpture and film will be objects from the collections that inspired them, including paintings by the war artist John Nash, items of crime and punishment, long-buried gold coins and rocks and fossils from the deep past.

Sam Mason, CEO of Discover Bucks Museum, says:

‘We have been delighted to work with the artists on This Fractured Land exhibition and the wonderful work they’ve created has interpreted the museum collections in exciting new ways. With themes of history and storytelling and references to the woodlands of the Chilterns this promises to be an intriguing, vibrant and thought-provoking show.’

Holi Spring Festival of Colours @ Discover Bucks Museum
Apr 27 @ 11:30 am – 4:00 pm
Holi Spring Festival of Colours @ Discover Bucks Museum

Join us for a vibrant celebration of Holi – Spring Festival of Colours 2024, hosted by the Aylesbury Hindu Temple Trust, a local charity dedicated to supporting our community. Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 27th, 2024, from 11:30 am to 4:00 pm, as we gather at Discover Bucks Museum, Aylesbury HP20 2QP, for a day filled with joy, unity, and cultural enrichment.

Holi is more than just a festival – it’s a celebration of love, unity, and new beginnings. Regardless of age or social status, people come together to cast away resentments and embrace the vibrant colours that symbolise positivity and the changing seasons. Aylesbury Vale’s multicultural landscape makes the celebration of Holi even more significant, fostering diversity, unity, and community cohesion.

Our Holi event promises a day of endless fun and entertainment for the whole family. From playing with dry powdered colours (Gulal) to indulging in delicious Indian street food, enjoying music and dance performances, engaging in children’s craft activities, participating in the raffle draw, and more – there’s something for everyone to enjoy. It is a time to let loose and celebrate life. Family and friends gather to playfully throw colourful paint and bright powders at each other and in the air, fully immersing themselves from head-to-toe in colour. Additionally, a traditional wooden drum called a “Dhol” is played by a troupe, while dancing amid the colours.

As we come together to celebrate Holi, we also strive to share knowledge about Hindu beliefs, customs, culture, and traditions, while promoting British values of mutual understanding and respect. This event is an opportunity for the wider local community to experience the beauty and richness of Indian culture firsthand, completely FREE of charge.

So, let’s paint the town with the colours of joy and camaraderie as we celebrate Holi together with dignitaries and residents of Aylesbury and surrounding areas. Whether you’re a seasoned Holi enthusiast or new to the festivities, everyone is welcome to join in the celebration.

May your day be filled with love, joy, fun and vibrant colours!

This event is FREE  – but please book your space to guarantee entry from the link below: Buy Holi Festival Tickets online – Discover Bucks Museum

Freedom of Aylesbury Parade @ Market Square, Aylesbury
Apr 28 @ 12:45 pm

Aylesbury Town Council and RAF Halton has announced that the Freedom of Aylesbury Parade will take place in Aylesbury’s Market Square on Sunday 28 April.

The prestigious parade celebrates the Freedom of Aylesbury which was bestowed upon RAF Halton. This was in recognition of the friendly association which has existed between the town, the people of Aylesbury, and the men and women of the Royal Air Force stationed at Halton.

RAF Halton will exercise its right to the Freedom of Entry to Aylesbury Town with a full ceremonial parade by marching through the town “bayonets fixed, Colours flying, drums beating and band playing” from 12:45pm, forming ranks in Market Square for 1pm, to solidify the important relationship that RAF Halton has with the town.

His Majesty the King’s Colours for RAF Halton will be paraded and led by the RAF Central Band. The parade will be reviewed by the Mayor of Aylesbury, Cllr Steven Lambert and Wing Commander Peter Seanor. Residents are encouraged to be part of this historic celebration in Market Square and to honour their local RAF unit.

The Freedom Parade is organised by Aylesbury Town Council and RAF Halton, takes place in Aylesbury Town Centre on Sunday 28 April from 12:45pm.
