We pledge to continue raising vital awareness of dementia in the community during Dementia Action Week. Led by Alzheimer’s Society, Dementia Action Week (17-23 May) is a national event that encourages the public to come together to take action to improve the lives of people affected by dementia.

From supporting local groups and organisations by empowering them to be more dementia-aware to hosting online Dementia Friends information sessions – Aylesbury Town Council’s Dementia Friendly Aylesbury initiative is marching forward to make Aylesbury Town as dementia-conscious as possible. The successful initiative has also led to Aylesbury recently receiving ‘Working to becoming Dementia Friendly’ status for the fifth year.

Since the start of the pandemic, the Town Council has hosted 18 Dementia Friends online sessions creating 144 Dementia Friends.

Local businesses including Aylesbury Library, Waitrose Aylesbury, Specsavers, NatWest, Bucks Museum and Aylesbury Market Traders, have been actively supporting the dementia community by adapting their workplace to support those living with the condition.

During Dementia Action Week, Aylesbury Town Council’s social media pages will showcase some of the incredible work of local people who have adapted to become more dementia friendly. Expect videos from Aylesbury Library, Holy Cow Home and Helen Pettifer and a special guest appearance from… you’ll have to watch to see!

The Town Council want to support local groups and businesses to slowly and safely bring back the community spirit we all know, love and miss back to its physical environment.
