There’s more to a person than their Dementia’: Aylesbury Town Council offering a free awareness session on World Alzheimer’s Day

Dementia Friends Virtual session for public  –  Monday 21 September 2020 at 7pm

COVID-19 may have affected many of the Aylesbury Town Council’s day to day activities, but the importance of community has remained.

The Council are continuing their Dementia Friendly work in the community after being officially recognised by the Alzheimer’s Society as a town with a Dementia-Friendly Community in 2016. They are offering a free Dementia Friends awareness session on World Alzheimer’s Day (Monday 21 September) to help increase awareness of the disease and spread the message that there’s more to a person than their dementia.

The desire for people to feel they belong is stronger than ever whether that is through family, faith, school or community group, which is why it’s so important to be aware of those living with dementia.

Since May 2016, Aylesbury Town Council’s Dementia Champion, Benedicta Lasoye, has delivered 87 sessions amassing to over 2,500 Dementia Friends in Aylesbury. The free sessions are open to all – whether you’re a local business, school, community or faith group who would like to be involved in supporting our campaign – you’re more than welcome to attend. The more Friends created, the further Aylesbury Town Council will increase general awareness within the community.

The free session will be hosted virtually on Zoom on Monday 21 September at 7pm and will cover the five main key messages that help to understand how Dementia can affect people. Not only does the session highlight the importance of effective communication, but also how routine plays a significant role for many people. The session focuses on more of the things people living with Dementia can do, with their carers, in the community. This could be visiting their local shops, café or spending time with family and friends.

The online session will be no longer than 40 minutes and will be presented by Benedicta (also known as Bee) Lasoye. The Town Council is delighted to promote the key message to residents and community that “There’s more to the person than their Dementia”.
