TOWN CENTRE ROMANS DAY IS TOGA-TASTIC!
Authentic Roman activities, a Roman Soldier, Roman storytelling from an angry Celt and Music played on authentic Roman instruments met more modern activities in the town centre last Sunday!
The sun shone on the many visitors taking a step back in time last Sunday to experience the Romans Fun Day at the top of Market Square, a free event organised by Aylesbury Town Council. Roman activities included pot making, ‘curse writing,’ leather stamping and jewellery making, all of which were hugely popular with families and children and as a result the tents were packed throughout the day.
Arguably the loudest performer of the day was the ‘Angry Celt’, protesting ‘Romani Ite Domum!’ (Romans Go Home!) through song and storytelling, using some of the instruments of the time. The whole day was also accompanied by music recorded on genuine Roman instruments, which contributed to the authentic atmosphere of the event.
Children and adults alike were intrigued by the two Roman living statues, who were accepting donations for the two Mayor’s Charities, Lymphoma and PACE. Visitors were particularly enthralled by the Roman Soldier, and the silver Roman lady proved very popular with passers-by.
Donations were also taken at the Aylesbury Town Council stand, in return for a choice of souvenir, and the Mayors Scout, Helena Rotherham, was also collecting throughout the morning. Over £50 was raised from donations on the day, which will be split between the two charities.
At the bottom of Market Square Twistina, the amazing balloon twister, also drew her usual large crowd and spent the day making balloon models as diverse as monkeys, spiders and even a Thomas the Tank Engine! She also was kind enough to donate two Aylesbury Duck balloon models to Aylesbury Town Council which took pride of place on the stand.
Elsewhere in the town the Fathers’ day activities were getting into full swing. In Kingsbury during the ‘Summer Sundays’ music event organised by Aylesbury Town Centre Partnership The Sound Force Big Band performed alongside Jay Oxenham, a Frank Sinatra tribute. Both acts were hugely popular and performed to large crowds throughout the day. Next Sunday (27th June) visitors to the town can look forward to a more laid back atmosphere as Reggae will be performed live in Market Square from 11.30am until 2pm.
The next event organised by Aylesbury Town Council is Aylesbury-on-Sea on the 11th July in Kingsbury. For one day only the seaside comes to Aylesbury! More details will soon be available under 'What's On'.
