The below outlines the category available in the school garden competition and the judging criteria with the number of points achievable.
Please note that due to the current COVID-19 pandemic we had to limit the number of categories to ensure we can still hold the competition whilst being compliant with the Government’s guidelines.
Best Garden in a Pot
Judges will look at the most appropriate positioning of displays, approach to design of planting, along with plant selection and structure. Judges will consider health and vigour along with measures to reduce the need for watering and sustainable cultivation method and consider the evidence of an ongoing project or enterprise connected with the pots.
Health and vigour – absence of pest and disease e.g. balanced feeding | 20 |
Design, decorations and suitability in relation to container and best use of space, evidence of pupil involvement in the planning, planting and maintenance of the pots | 10 |
Choice of planting, variety of species, impact and range plus potential of plants used for long term display | 15 |
Impact – presentation, use of colour, texture and scent | 20 |
Horticultural maintenance including watering and dead-heading, absence of weeds | 15 |
Evidence of an ongoing project or enterprise connected with the pots to support learning, such as a common theme to tie in with current affairs or school curriculum. Evidence can be in the form of scrapbooks, photos, displays etc. | 20 |
