St. George’s Celebration and Scout Parade

St George's Celebrations 2018

Sunday 22 April, 2018

This was a great day-out, steeped in traditional English history and culture, dowsed in good-old family fun and entertainment. There was St George riding his magnificent steed, as well as a puppet dragon who was more sweet than scary.  Queens Park Arts Centre provided interactive sessions featuring a variety of traditional crafts  including willow weaving, crochet, lace making, tapestry, pottery, wood carving and blacksmithing – with many visitors taking up the opportunity to have a go. Children, of all ages, tried their hands at archery, sword fighting and May Pole Dancing. Skills were tested in our cricket simulator and many enjoyed the traditional board games, alongside arts, crafts and a range of games and activities. There was a St George and Dragon puppet show and a special condensed version of Twelfth Night, (by Queens Park Arts Centre)

The annual scout parade was led by The marching Amersham Band, and St George on horseback with over 200 Scouts, marching to St Mary’s Church, for the annual affirmation service.

Proms in the Park – part of Parklife Weekend

Proms in the Park

Proms in the Park on  Sunday 26 August, 2018

The rain fell in buckets for the entire day, but as the band entered the stage for the final rehearsal the clouds parted and the sun tried to creep through.

Visitors arrived with picnics, flags and umbrellas – they were treated to a array of compositions from across the world, as Aylesbury Concert Band, took the audience “around the world in 80 minuets”  Interval performance was by the Hartbeat African Drummers.

The entire weekend’s free festival was rounded off by a fantastic firework display.  We were pleased that the rain clouds stayed away (for most of the time).

Tudor Fayre

Tudor Fair at Bucks County Museum

We brought the Tudors to life at interactive historical fayre on Sunday 9 September, 2018

King Henry VIII, was wandering the grounds, with visitors joining him as he was entertained by his comical court Jester.

There were a host of informative, historical performers  – The skinner, whose knowledge and skill ensured the common Tudor folk were fed and clothed. A gamesman brought a variety of traditional games for visitors to try. A wood turner, whose pedal-powered pole-lathe showed exactly how technology and innovation assisted in modern production methods.  The archers provided an impressive display and taught visitors how to shoot a long bow and (to the lucky few) a cross bow. Inside the museum there was code breaking, coin making, purse sewing and so much more.

Queens Park Arts Centre, provided make-n-take crafts.

The Clock Tower Strikes Again – a walking play

Walking Play '18

The Clock Tower Strikes, was an interactive walking play that wound it’s way around Aylesbury’s old town on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 October, 2018

Visitors were entertained by local actors brought together by David Pustansky of Spark Buddy Productions, who wrote, directed and stared in the production.

A story of murder, deception, truth and lies unravelled as the audience followed the action as it happened.  With 4 shows over 2 nights, 2 in very heavy rain, were a sell out success.

Carolfest took place on Sunday 8th December, 2018

Over 450 visitors enjoyed the informal community carol singing , where everyone helped to fill the church to the rafters with traditional Christmas Carols in a very relaxed, warm, friendly atmosphere. Children from the Turnfurlong Junior School Choir along with Caduceus Brass Quintet and The Next Stage Choir lead the carols, with Dez Kay compering the evenings singing. There was tea, coffee and hot chocolate with a mince pie or two, courtesy of Tesco Aylesbury 2 Community and the Scouts, whilst raising funds for the Mayor’s charity, Carers Bucks.
