Aylesbury’s new Mayor was elected at Aylesbury Town Council’s Annual Meeting on Thursday 11 May at the Town Hall.
Cllr Steven Lambert has been elected as Town Mayor. Cllr Alan Sherwell has been elected as Deputy Town Mayor and Cllr Richard Lloyd has been elected as Leader of the Council.
Mayor of Aylesbury for 2023-24, Cllr Steven Lambert, said: “I am honoured to be elected as Mayor of Aylesbury for a town I have called home for more than 20 years. This town is where I have set down roots and become embedded in community life by being a Parish, district, county and now unitary councillor, a long-standing Trustee of our town’s youth charity, a school governor and a champion of support for local community groups.
“As Mayor, my aim is to continue championing our town, raising our profile and our community’s spirits and highlighting the so many wonderful groups and individuals that make our town the best place it can be – for all of us.”
The new Town Mayor has also announced the charities he will be supporting during his mayoral year. He said: “My chosen charities are very close to my heart. I am proud to be able to support Youth Concern. I have been a trustee and community ambassador for Youth Concern since 2007 and have supported their youth work including counselling, mental health support, youth foodbank and the Next Steps and Night Stop programmes.
“Age UK Buckinghamshire Aylesbury branch host a Befriending Plus Service which supports our town’s older residents’ quality of life by alleviating social isolation by matching specially trained volunteers to older people who have limited social contact. This regular contact can make a real difference to an older person’s quality of life when supported by someone with shared interests and experiences. This is a service I wish to support during my mayoralty.
“Following on from former Town Mayor, Cllr Tim Dixon, and his 10 Tonne Challenge which supported Aylesbury Foodbank, it is clear there remains a constant need for our community to continue to support the Foodbank. The changing of a Mayor doesn’t mean the community need for a foodbank has gone away. In fact, it has become more important to continue to grow and support our town’s foodbank and nearly 80 donation stations.”
The Town Mayor and Deputy Town Mayor will be formally inaugurated at the Town Council’s Mayor Making ceremony on Friday 19 May.
